To work with the global society toward a common goal, mainly by advocating and safeguarding the interest of our members inclusively and enabling them to become self-sufficient and fully responsible citizens. To accomplish this, we will collectively and continuously strive to bring services to each member, leading to greater success overall as a community.
"By Community for the Community"
Oromia Community Center in Washington is a community-based organization whose mission is to work with the global society toward a common goal. OCCIWA has established authentic connections with the community we serve. We have actively engaged community members to identify and understand their unique needs. Our organization has consistently sought community input to co-create culturally affirming solutions that address their concerns and aspirations.
In a public meeting with about 100 Seattle area Oromo young women and men in July 2020, all agreed to dedicate their time to re-establish the community center to bring services to the underserved and mobilize Washington State Oromo residents. Over the course of the year elected members and volunteers from the community officially have been operating under Oromia Community Center in Washington (OCCIWA). Currently, we have formed a formal partnership with Horn of Africa Services (HOAS). Also, we have made meaningful discussions and connections with Churches and Mosques leaders, all Seattle area traditional financial and social support groups (Afoosha), Oromo Youth Association (OYA), Oromo Cultural Center (OCC), Team Oromia Seattle (TOS).
Our dedicated team is lead by four Executive Committee members and six Board of Directors working hard to give the best community services for Oromo people living in Washington State. Our philosophy at OCCIWA is to work intensely with the community to meet their needs. In addition to our talented staff, we have many volunteers that give their time and effort to serving our community. We are a team - we work with each other and with the community as a team. In a “team” all members are important, and each person must share the vision and mission of the whole. Also, through our formal partnership with Horn of Africa Services (HOAS), and connections with churches, mosque leaders and many other groups, we have a strong team that is able to bring many different services to our community.
Lets build our community together!
